St Martin’s Parish Church, Sunday 5 July at 6pm

Cantabile is looking forward to leading the annual Patronal Festival Choral Evensong on Sunday 5 July at 6pm in St. Martin’s Parish Church, where the choir is privileged to rehearse each week.

This Patronal service celebrates the second annual feast day of St Martin of Tours which marks the saint’s ordination and the removal of his remains to Tours Cathedral.

Cantabile, directed by Graham Caldbeck, will be joined by the Rector’s wife, Anne Stone on cornet and Michael Wynne, the Director of Music at St. Luke’s, will play the organ and accompany the choir. The Rector of St. Martin’s, Rev. Pete Stone will give the sermon and Rev. Martin Dryden, curate at St. Clement’s Parish Church, Ministre Desservant of Trinity Church and member of Cantabile, is the Cantor.

The choral music to be performed is attractively wide-ranging. From the 17th century the choir performs both Sing we joyfully by Adrian Batten (1591-1637), ‘Vicar Choral’
(i.e. singer) at both Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Preces and Responses by William Smith (1603-45) a member of the Durham Cathedral Choir. Music by two Cambridge organist-composers is included – the famous mid-19th century setting of the canticles by Thomas Attwood Walmisley (1814-56), Organist at both Trinity College and St. John’s College, and the anthem O how amiable are thy dwellings by Trinity graduate, Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). This anthem was composed and first performed in 1934 as part of a pageant held in Abinger in Surrey produced by the writer E. M. Forster.

Before the service, from about 5.40pm, Michael Wynne will play organ music by Lübeck, Lefébure-Wély, Campbell and Peeters.

Four well-known hymns are included for everyone to sing.
All present are invited to join the choir for a glass of wine and nibbles after the service.
