Following the inaugural ‘Green Care Jersey’ gathering last October at Grow, the group is meeting we are meeting again next month (12 June) at The Frances Le Sueur Centre in St Ouen.
It ism open to anyone interested in staying in touch with Green Care developments on the Island, the discussions will focus on building the WhatsApp group and its uses. The organiser, Stepen Seller, will also introduce briefly the benefits of biannual GC provider meetings, which were started last week in four counties across the South of England.Green Care is a rapidly expanding land diversification, which can have a commercial element. Across the South of England there are an average of 15+ farms per county providing the service and countless horticultural/other activities on smallholdings and the like.
Visiting participants can be anybody from 9-90yo with an additional need eg autism, learning difficulty or poor mental health. Typically they will visit the Green Site one day per week mostly to do regular jobs under light supervision according to age, choice and ability. The outcomes after just a short programme of 12 weeks are quite remarkable!
In order to support the expanding opportunities on the Island, a new WhatsApp group was launched last month at the Grow Project in Sion. This new link will enable those already providing the service, or anyone else just interested in its future, to follow developments and get in touch if they wish. Members in this group so far include the National Trust, Jersey Mencap as well as farms, smallholdings, other Green sites and individuals providing or interested in the service.
You can join the ‘Green Care Jersey’ WhatsApp group today by texting Stephen Sellers on 07596 077261 with a first name, preferred mobile number and parish; no obligation or cost and you can of course leave the group at any time.
