Cantabile will be singing a musically varied Choral Evensong for Pentecost.
The choir is looking forward to leading a Patronal Festival Choral Evensong on Sunday 6 July at 6pm in St. Martin’s Parish Church, where it enjoys enjoys the privilege of rehearsing each week.
This Patronal service celebrates the second annual feast day of St. Martin of Tours which marks the Saint’s ordination and the removal of his remains to Tours Cathedral.
Cantabile, directed by Graham Caldbeck, is joined by the Rector’s wife, Anne Stone on trumpet, and Michael Wynne, the Director of Music at St. Luke’s, will play the organ and accompany the choir. The Rector of St. Martin, Rev Pete Stone, will give the sermon and Rev Martin Dryden, curate at St. Clement’s Parish Church and member of Cantabile, will act as Cantor.
The choral music to be performed is attractively wide-ranging – from Byrd’s Preces and Responses in the 16th Century to recent pieces by Bob Chilcott – Now the green blade riseth and Timothy Noon – The Lord is my light and my salvation in the 21st. The canticles will be sung to the famous setting in E major by Herbert Murrill.
Before the service, from about 5.45pm, Michael Wynne will play organ music by Byrd, Purcell and Fletcher, and Anne Stone will perform Stanley’s famous Trumpet Voluntary.
Four well-known hymns are included for everyone to sing.
All present are invited to join the choir for a glass of wine and nibbles after the service.
Everyone is welcome.
