FOUR Jersey artists won prizes in the ‘Inspired by Jersey’ Art Competition, at the exhibition held at The Harbour Gallery Jersey on Friday evening.
The winner of the Judges’ Choice category was Casey Laurent for his painting ‘Water’s Edge’.
The winner of the Landscape category was Shannon Le Seeleur for her painting ’Wonder of Jersey’
The winner of the Seascape category was Naomi Renouf for her painting ‘Sand and Sea’.
The winner of the Rural Activity category was Cate Hamilton for her painting ’La Fais’sie d’Cidre.
Each of the winning artists received a cheque for £300 from the competition sponsor, BCR Law, whose managing partner, David Benest, was a judge of the competition along with former Head of Art at De La Salle College Mark Blanchard, and Josh Feldman of the National Trust for Jersey.
The cheques were presented by the Bailiff, Mr Robert MacRae KC.
The competition marked the 25th anniversary of the Art in the Frame charitable foundation and its physical presence, The Harbour Gallery.
The evening was hosted by the foundation’s director, Pat Robson.
The concept of ‘Inspired by Jersey’ came from RURAL magazine. Its editor, Alasdair Crosby, made a short speech of welcome., in which he said: ‘This is a people’s art exhibition; an exhibition inspired by Jersey and its rural environment and coastline; an exhibition to remind us – lest we forget – of how much we stand to lose, be it through over-development, through greed, or through sheer absent-mindedness and uninterest.’
The exhibition will remain open for three weeks, closing on 2 October.
The second part of ‘Inspired by Jersey’ will be the literary competition for authors who have been inspired by Jersey in one way or another. This is currently being judged and the awards evening, sponsored by BCR Law, will be held on 12 November at The Harbour Gallery Jersey.
