The Jersey Bat Group has announced its 2025–2026 Winter Talks series, bringing together six inspiring bat experts from around the world for an engaging season of conservation stories, cutting-edge research, and Island-to-international perspectives on bat ecology.
Running from November to March, this online speaker series will feature leading bat researchers from Jersey, the UK, and Europe, offering rare insight into bat conservation across diverse habitats and cultures.
Confirmed speakers include:
Piers Sangan – One of the Jersey’s foremost bat experts, exploring the ecology and conservation of Jersey’s rare bat species.
Christel Rose Bachmann – A pioneer in Estonian bat research, sharing citizen-science successes and conservation projects protecting Northern European bat populations.
Miranda Collett – Jersey Bat Group Training Officer and international conservationist presenting her research on bats in northeast Argentina.
Mariia Matlova – University of Helsinki PhD researcher and BatLab Finland member discussing her work on hibernating bats in underground habitats.
Dr Amy Louise Hall – A leading Channel Islands ecologist presenting new findings on bat use of offshore reefs through an exciting local collaboration project.
Penelope Fialas – Bat researcher examining the economic value of bats and their crucial ecosystem services in partnership with the Bat Conservation Trust and University of Exeter.
This series celebrates global bat science with direct relevance to Jersey’s ecology, volunteer networks, and conservation community. We hope local media will join us in promoting this exciting learning opportunity for islanders.
