As part of RURAL magazine’s remit of encouraging and promoting localism, be it in local produce or local creativity… in short, the local community spirit that sometimes seems to be slipping away from Island life, include in our regular RURAL POST mailings, poetry, inspired by the Island, from the pen of local poets.

ISLAND PACING

By Sandra Noel

If you find yourself on the bank of a rue or ruelle

waiting for a car to pass by,

the hum of the engine nearing

and the slow gait of the horse, hoof

by hoof on the opposite edge;

do not wish for a hurrying,

a speeding of moment to moment

so you can get on with your journey.

Instead, cast your eyes down,

pick out one blade of grass

and thank a Jersey lily in flower.

Speak in your head

to the tree you are touching,

its leaves singing in orange.

Tell this bank you are grateful for seasons,

this peep into the window of the next.
