Sunday 5 October 6pm Grouville Parish Church |
Cantabile has sung in many parish churches and chapels in the Island and, as they say, it is always heart-warming to be invited back. And so it is with Grouville Parish Church where the Rector, the Rev Helen Gunton has invited the choir to sing a special Harvest choral evensong on Sunday 5 October at 6pm. Music Director, Graham Caldbeck, has chosen a varied programme including music by famous English composers William Byrd (c.1540-1623) – Preces and Responses and Edward Elgar (1857-1934 – Fear not, O land) alongside the well-known Evening Service in B minor by T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953), a late 19th-century organist at York Minster before he moved to St. Thomas’s in New York. The service opens with the premiere of a short introit – Consider the lilies – by Graham, composed for the choir. The congregation is invited to raise the roof by joining in the singing three popular harvest hymns – Come, ye thankful people, come; Fill your hearts with joy and gladness and We plough the fields, and scatter the good seed on the land. Organist Michael Wynne will give a short organ recital before the service from 5.45pm. This includes Le coucou by Daquin (1694-1772), Cantilène by Elgar and two pieces by Frank Bridge (1879-1941). The whole service concludes with Postlude in D Minor by Stanford (1852-1924). Everyone is invited.
