An exhibition of paintings and ceramics by local artists Rosemary and Lucy Blackmore is being held at the Atlantic Hotel, St Brelade from 8 to 11 October,from10am to 5pm daily
‘The Light Within’ is the title of an exhibition of paintings and ceramics of Rosemary Blackmore (mother) and Lucy Blackmore (daughter). It is in aid of Dementia Jersey, with both artists donating 20 percent of the profit to the charity. The exhibition will be opened by the C.E.O. of Dementia Jersey, Claudine Snape.
The theme of this year’s exhibition is loosely ‘Nature’ and, as well as seascapes. It encompasses flora and fauna, including some small still-life paintings. Fish, birds, plants and animals all feature in both her paintings and ceramics, including a large metre-square painting of stampeding horses and, of course, one of her favourite subjects, beautiful iconic Jersey cows.
The ceramics are varied, such as poppy seed pods, vases and some quirky octopus and jellyfish pieces.
New for this year are flower panels, three of which are large and mounted on beautiful wooden panels. Smaller versions are also available.
‘Rosemary said: ‘I love combining different materials with my ceramics and am delighted to have enlisted the help of two local craftsmen: Darren from Woodshed Living and Theo, an artist blacksmith, to enhance my work. Darren created the wooden panels on which the flowers are mounted, while Theo made the metal bases for two bird baths.’
Everything is handmade and unique, and visitors will find not only original paintings but also sculptural pieces for the home and garden.
Rosemary has occasionally exhibited with her eldest daughter, Hannah, who is a successful professional artist now living in Tasmania. ‘Having Lucy join me for this exhibition is another privilege, and I am extremely proud of both our daughters’ achievements in the art world.’
Lucy has spent 11 years leading art classes for Dementia Jersey, which are hugely popular with people living with dementia and their carers.
Rosemary said that having encouraged creativity and confidence in others for so long, it felt very special to be showcasing Lucy’s own paintings in this exhibition. She will also be exhibiting a collection of her much sought-after ceramic houses.
Lucy said: ‘My work offers escapism, inviting viewers into worlds that are deeply personal. My paintings create emotional landscapes that offer a sense of solitude and reflection.’
Rosemary and Lucy hope they have created a joyful celebration of the natural world. Rosemary added: ‘Colour, texture and mood are important elements of the exhibition and, if our work evokes an emotional response or familiar feelings about the subject matter, we will have achieved our aim.
‘To say there is something for everyone in this exhibition is an understatement. Lucy and I look forward to welcoming both new visitors and our many loyal supporters.’
This is the third year Rosemary has held an exhibition in support of a local charity. The previous two were for the Jersey branch of the RNLI and Jersey Hospice.
